New Citizens Group Pressing for Streetcar Line on Wisconsin Avenue
Friday, March 12th, 2010Following the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) October 2009 release of its plan for eight streetcar lines covering 37 miles of the city’s streets, some Ward 3 residents noticed that DDOT’s map of the planned streetcar routes had only an arrow pointing up Wisconsin Avenue, indicating the possibility of a future streetcar line there one day, rather than a colored line denoting a planned streetcar line.
Soon afterward, a group of Ward 3 residents came together to form the Wisconsin Avenue Streetcar Coalition and build support for a ninth streetcar line on Wisconsin Avenue. Leader Ben Thielen created a Facebook group, which as of this post has 144 supporters. He and other group members have contacted Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) across the ward to seek their formal support for the Wisconsin Avenue line.
The Sierra Club’s Washington, D.C. Chapter, which has been advocating for an extensive streetcar network in D.C. for years, recently endorsed the idea of a streetcar line on Wisconsin Avenue at the request of the Wisconsin Avenue Streetcar Coalition.
